Purple Martins have been spotted in North America, and in just a few short weeks they will be returning to nest in Portage Lakes for the Summer. The Portage Lakes Purple Martin Association has been busy sanitizing the nests and preparing them to be put back up for the season. The first wave of birds – the older males – will lead the pack returning sometime before the end of March. Birds will continue to arrive through early June.
You can see the birds nesting around the lakes, in white gourd-like nests high atop poles. The largest colony is at North Reservoir at the State Mill park. All together, there are over 600 nests that PLPMA takes care of year round!
We look forward to the return of our feathered friends. We will keep you posted!
